Zhang Qingyang (born 1995), better known by his professional name Crazy Little Brother Yang[1] (疯狂小杨哥, Fēngkuáng xiǎo yáng gē), is a Chinese social media influencer and entrepreneur. He rose to prominence through Douyin, the Chinese short-video platform that operates as the domestic counterpart of TikTok. In March 2022, he became the platform's most-followed individual, overtaking Hong Kong actor and singer Andy Lau.

Early Life and Career

Zhang was born in Anhui province, China. He entered the short-video industry in 2015, initially producing content for Kuaishou, one of China's major video-sharing platforms. In 2018, he and his twin brother established an account on Douyin and began attracting attention through a series of videos known as "desperate weekend".[2] Their videos commonly portrayed humorous situations involving family members and everyday life, helping them develop a large following.

Rise to Prominence

By November 2022, Zhang had become the first individual on Douyin to surpass 100 million followers.[3] His popularity was largely built around comedic videos depicting family interactions and ordinary aspects of daily life, which attracted a broad audience on the platform.

Business Ventures

Zhang later moved beyond content creation and developed a presence in the e-commerce sector. His commercial activities included livestream shopping, with his livestream sales reportedly generating a gross merchandise volume of approximately 538 million yuan in January 2023. His business activity subsequently changed during the following months.

Controversies

In September 2023, Zhang and his company, Three Sheep, were fined 68.9 million yuan (US$9.83 million) in connection with claims that certain mooncakes had been sourced from Hong Kong.[4]

Recognition

The Guangdong E-commerce Summit Forum reported in 2023 that Zhang's annual net income was 3.21 billion yuan (US$451 million). The figure was cited in coverage of the earnings of prominent Chinese online influencers and reflected the scale of his commercial activities within China's digital economy.[5]

Personal Life

Zhang's twin brother has played a significant role in his career as a content creator. The two brothers have frequently appeared together and worked jointly on their social media and business activities. Their collaboration has been an important part of their presence and development on Chinese social media platforms.
