Businessman or businesswoman is a person who owns or controls a private establishment and engages in commercial or industrial activities for the purpose of generating cash flow, sales, and revenue by utilising a combination of human and financial capital, as well as intellectual and physical capital, with the goal of promoting economic development and growth.

An individual who founded, owns, or controls a controlling stake in a private institution is referred to as a "businessperson." When used to describe someone who is an angel investor in a private company, the phrase may be misleading.
